Now and then, a guest joins Impact Quantum who reminds me why we started this show in the first place: to make the future feel human again. When Brian Lenahan returned to talk with Frank La Vigne and me, it wasn’t about qubits or quantum mysticism. It was about readiness, risk, and the quiet courage it takes to prepare for change before it arrives.
Brian is one of those rare voices who can explain quantum computing without losing you in the math. As the founder of the Quantum Strategy Institute and author of Quantum Boost and Quantum Excellence, he’s on a mission to help organizations move from confusion to clarity. “Governments are preparing for the quantum future today,” he said. “Whether you agree with their timeline or not, they’re doing it.” And that, he noted, should be a wake-up call for every enterprise still waiting for a headline moment to start paying attention.
The Risk That Woke Up the Room
When Brian talks about risk, it’s not in the abstract. It’s about the data we already hold, the systems we already trust, and the potential cracks we don’t yet see. He put it: if your organization’s data or your clients’ data could be harvested by bad actors today and unlocked tomorrow, then quantum readiness isn’t optional.
That sense of urgency isn’t fear-based. It’s about stewardship. Post-quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution aren’t buzzwords; they’re the new guardrails for a digital world that runs on trust. “If you understand the risk,” Brian said, “you start to realize we need protection.”
As someone who has spent years exploring the intersection of technology and empathy, I appreciate that Brian starts with people, not hardware. He sees readiness not as a checklist, but as a mindset shift. One of my favorite moments from our talk was when Brian described how he explains quantum computing to the C-suite. He doesn’t mention superposition or entanglement. He asks, “What are your hardest technology problems? What if I had a solution that could solve those faster than anything you use today?”
That’s the doorway to fundamental understanding: empathy first, science second. We also explored one of my favorite topics: the future of the quantum workforce. Brian doesn’t believe the next generation of quantum professionals will all wear lab coats. The industry will need marketers, HR leaders, policymakers, storytellers, and people who can bridge the gap between complex technology and human impact.
“Someone inside every organization must become the ‘quantum strategist,’” he said, the person who speaks both business and technology fluently enough to translate one into the other.
That idea makes me smile, because it’s exactly how so many of us came into this space through curiosity, not credentials. I asked Brian how we can attract more diverse thinkers into quantum, and he didn’t hesitate: influence and awareness. “LinkedIn influencers and podcasts like this one are how curiosity spreads,” he said.
I love that. Curiosity as an invitation. Inclusion as a spark.
Policy, Ethics, and the Race for Advantage
Of course, you can’t talk about quantum without talking about geopolitics. Brian painted a vivid picture of a fragmented landscape: North America focused on security, Europe extending GDPR into quantum ethics, and Asia advancing at a rapid pace on its own path. “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach,” he warned. “When the first fully capable quantum computer exists, the creator probably won’t announce it they’ll use it.”
I compared it to a new Sputnik race, not about rockets this time, but about data and trust. Brian agreed, describing a future where quantum and classical systems will need to coexist securely. “The question isn’t whether hybrid systems will exist,” he said. “It’s how.”
That line stuck with me. It’s a perfect reflection of where we are as a species learning, sometimes painfully, how to blend old structures with new possibilities.
The Long Runway
Before we wrapped, I asked Brian what gives him hope. He smiled and said, “We’re nowhere near taking quantum computing off the shelf, but now is absolutely the time to get your team thinking about it.”
That, to me, is the real story here. Quantum computing isn’t waiting for its “ChatGPT moment.” The revolution is unfolding in quiet, yet practical, ways in risk management, chemistry, agriculture, and logistics. It’s the steady work of people who believe in preparing early, learning constantly, and keeping curiosity alive.
