Imagine you’re driving a car that everyone says can break the sound barrier. Exciting, right? You jump in, hit the gas, and… nothing. Turns out, the car looks incredible parked in your driveway, but on the road, it’s just another sedan. That’s how I’ve felt lately about the future of quantum computing—a topic I thought I had pinned down a couple of years ago when I predicted that the related hype would start to fizzle by 2024. Well, it appears I might have been too hasty.

Here’s the heart of my conundrum: I was dead certain that quantum computing hype would begin to wane as technical challenges and underwhelming results started to surface. Instead, the opposite has happened. Companies and investors are sledding down a rabbit hole of excitement, backed by potential and speculative capabilities, while actual results seem to trail far behind. It’s like the quantum computing world has discovered its own form of perpetual motion, and I find myself scratching my head, trying to figure out why.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing developments in this field is the claim from Quantum Mission, a UK-based company, stating they’ve crafted the first full-stack, scalable quantum computer. They talk about mass-producing these marvels of modern science, boasting about scaling up to a million qubits—quantum computing’s version of processing units. Fancy. However, I have a sneaking suspicion there’s more spark than fire here.

Now, for perspective, the crux of quantum computing relies on these qubits behaving well under highly controlled conditions; think millichelvin temperatures, which are just fractions above absolute zero. Managing a few qubits is already a Herculean task, but scaling up to thousands without errors skyrocketing? That’s a chapter of science fiction waiting to be written. IBM might need a super fridge that can house a small planet if they want to keep up. All hilarity aside, there seems to be a significant disconnection between what’s promised and what’s currently achievable.

It almost sounds absurd—companies claiming the imminent mass-production of quantum computers, akin to declaring the mass-production of spaceships that can’t yet fly. And then we have stock prices of quantum ventures, soaring as if they’ve cracked some universal code. It feels like there’s an invisible force driving these stocks, far removed from the grounded reality of actual technological progress. Could it be solely the thrill of theoretical breakthroughs? Or maybe it’s the heavy investments from governments and major corporations like JP Morgan, tilting the scales?

The bubble around quantum computing is being inflated by spectacular claims—like IBM suggesting that quantum computers will soon facilitate algorithmic trading. As Scott Aronson, a renowned computer scientist, wisecracked about similar bold statements, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel if the fish were already lifeless.

More likely, the unabated enthusiasm could stem from a mix of secretive technological advances and substantial government backing, particularly with military interests in mind. It’s no secret that technology and defense intersect frequently, and as nations vie for supremacy in the next big tech frontier, quantum computing is a prized arena.

Then there’s the broader conversation—about how stories are reported and received depending on your news sources. It reminds me of a neat tool I’ve come to appreciate: Ground News. It provides a comprehensive look at how stories are covered across the political spectrum and by various outlets worldwide. Discovering stories that have been overlooked or underreported depending on where you get your news is quite the eye-opener, reinforcing the notion that we must tread carefully amidst the quantum hype and seek out nuanced, well-rounded perspectives.

For now, I’ll keep a watchful eye on quantum computing developments, balancing my enthusiasm with a healthy dose of skepticism. As history has shown us time and again, the line between breakthrough and bust is often razor-thin.
