Argentina’s quantum ecosystem is further along than most people think.
That sentence alone tends to raise eyebrows when I say it in rooms full of quantum insiders. Because the default mental map of quantum still looks something like this:
🇺🇸 United States
🇨🇳 China
🇪🇺 Europe
🇨🇦 Canada
And then… everyone else.
But after our latest Impact Quantum conversation, I’m more convinced than ever that this mental model is overdue for an update.
When Frank and I sat down with Daniel Ruiz, founder of QNow, one theme came through clearly: LATAM is building quietly — and strategically.
In fact, Frank put it plainly during the discussion. Argentina’s quantum and broader tech scene was “a surprise… further along than people think.”
That surprise factor is exactly what the global ecosystem should be paying attention to.
What Most People Are Missing
Here’s the pattern I keep seeing in quantum conversations:
We over-index on hardware headlines.
We under-index on ecosystem depth.
But ecosystems don’t emerge overnight. They build through:
- technical talent pipelines
- academic engagement
- entrepreneurial culture
- early application work
- hybrid classical + quantum experimentation
And this is where Argentina and parts of LATAM are quietly gaining ground.
As Daniel shared during our conversation:
“In LATAM we have a lot of talented people… and the capacity to create software and even stabilize qubits.”
Read that again.
Talent. Software capability. Foundational hardware research.
That is not the profile of a region sitting on the sidelines.
The Application Layer Advantage
One of the most interesting strategic insights from Daniel is where LATAM may move fastest.
Not necessarily in full-stack quantum hardware.
But in applications.
This is a crucial distinction.
While major national programs race toward larger qubit counts, many emerging ecosystems are focusing on:
- quantum software
- hybrid AI + quantum workflows
- industry-specific use cases
- data pipeline readiness
Daniel’s team, for example, is already targeting:

🧬 healthcare and drug discovery
Why does this matter?
Because near-term quantum value will almost certainly emerge through hybrid approaches, not pure quantum advantage in isolation. Regions that lean into pragmatic, application-driven innovation may punch above their weight much sooner than expected.
The Entrepreneurial Signal
Another signal that stood out to me: culture.
Daniel described Argentina’s ecosystem as highly entrepreneurial, with strong participation from young researchers and developers entering the field. Events like the Qiskit Fall Festival are helping energize the next wave of quantum-curious talent locally.
If you’ve been watching emerging tech long enough, you know this pattern.
First comes curiosity.
Then community.
Then capability.
Then companies.
LATAM is clearly moving through that curve.
The Barriers Are Real — But Familiar
To be clear, this is not a hype narrative.
The challenges Daniel outlined are very real:
- limited venture awareness of quantum
- access to compute resources
- market education hurdles
- infrastructure gaps
But here’s the important context:
These are not uniquely LATAM problems.
Many early quantum ecosystems, including those in North America and Europe, have faced (and are still facing) versions of these same constraints.
What’s different in Argentina is the level of pragmatic focus I’m hearing from founders:
- bootstrapping where necessary
- building classical AI traction first
- preparing data pipelines now
- positioning for hybrid quantum value later
That discipline matters.
Why Global Players Should Be Watching
If you are:
🔹 a quantum platform provider
🔹 a cloud or hyperscaler team
🔹 a venture investor
🔹 an enterprise innovation leader
…it may be time to widen the aperture.
Because the next meaningful quantum corridor may not emerge only from the usual geographies.
What I’m seeing and what this conversation reinforced is that the quantum landscape is becoming more regional, more distributed, and more diverse than the early narrative suggested.
Argentina is one to watch.
LATAM more broadly is one to watch.
And the teams building quietly today may become some of the most interesting players in the next phase of the quantum era.
