Every once in a while, on Impact Quantum, we hit an interview that quietly rewires the way you see the industry. My conversation with Dr. Bob Sutor, mathematician, former IBM Research leader, author of Dancing with Qubits, and CEO of the Sutor Group, was precisely that. The Quantum Landscape Is About to Shrink Before It Expands

Today, he estimates roughly 85 hardware companies are fighting for visibility, funding, and credibility. That number will not last. The forces shaping the next era include geopolitical pressure, national tech pride, investor expectations, and a brutal reality check about revenue. All of that will reduce the landscape to perhaps 20 or 25 companies, with maybe 10 eventually becoming public.

His analogy was perfect. It will look like the early days of the automobile industry. Many makers, many experiments, and then consolidation driven partly by innovation, partly by national interest, and partly by who can actually build something people want and trust.

The message for the Impact Quantum community is simple. If you want to understand where this field is going, watch the economics as closely as the science.

Collaboration Sounds Great, but Ego Still Rules the Lab

Bob did not sugarcoat this. Many quantum hardware companies begin inside academic labs where founders have spent their entire careers championing a single modality. Tenure, publication cycles, prestige, and personal identity all shape the culture. Collaboration sounds ideal, but the pride of approach runs deep.

Still, he expects the fragmentation to resolve itself through mergers, pivots, acquisitions, and investors forcing hard decisions. At some point, every founder must face the same choice. Do we sell the IP, merge, or try something new? Reality always arrives.

The Breakthrough Problem Everyone Feels

Bob echoed something Frank and I talk about all the time. The constant flood of so-called breakthroughs. Every day, someone publishes, announces, or markets a new first-ever result. In Bob’s own newsletter, he highlights words like “breakthrough,” “pioneer,” and “first ever” so readers can see how often they appear.

Many announcements are incremental. Some are dramatic in name only. A few are truly meaningful.

This is where Bob sees one of his roles in the ecosystem, not as a hype killer but as an educator. Someone who helps the industry ask better questions and interpret claims more realistically. Quantum needs more clarity like that.

Teenagers Who Do Not Carry Classical Baggage Are the Wild Card

This was the most delightful insight of the entire conversation.

Dr. Sutor has spoken with 12, 14, and 15-year-olds who are already writing quantum programs. Not because a school taught them, but because they sought it out themselves. They might be the ones who push the field forward in surprising ways.

The reason is simple. They do not have decades of classical computing intuition to unlearn. They are not wrestling with the idea that you cannot copy quantum data or loop quantum operations the way you would classically. They accept the rules of the quantum model without friction.

His line stuck with me. They do not have decades of classical thinking. They grow up in this mixed model.

And that changes everything.

The Decade Ahead Will Redefine the Field

Bob reminded us that we will eventually look back at this era with nostalgia. The NISQ days will be remembered fondly, but no one will pretend they delivered fault-tolerant breakthroughs at scale. The 2030s will be the decade of absolute stability. Multi-core quantum processors. Integrated QPUs and HPC frameworks. Better networking between quantum systems. Less mystery. More engineering.

Quantum will stop feeling like magic. It will simply become the next evolution of computing.
