Why These Two?
Because both had a wild 2025. Their stocks jumped, the headlines multiplied, and quantum started getting talked about like it might actually leave the lab and show up in someone’s portfolio.

Rigetti: Flashier, Riskier, and Still in the Game
Rigetti, on the other hand, is all-in on gate-based quantum computing — the holy grail, the ideal, the supercomputer of the future.
Their advantage? Speed. Their systems have been reported to be 1,000x faster than those of some competitors, such as IonQ.
Their problem? Accuracy. All that speed doesn’t help much if the answers aren’t trustworthy. In a quantum system, even a tiny error can snowball. Rigetti’s fidelity metrics (how reliable their qubits are) have lagged behind.
That said, they’ve scored major partnerships — Nvidia, the U.S. Air Force — and that’s not nothing. But missing a major DARPA milestone? And delaying their next system because of error rates? That’s a wobble in a space where balance matters.
So… Which Company Makes More Sense Right Now?
Look — I’m not a VC in a hoodie or someone who doodles quantum gate diagrams in her planner. But from where I stand, D-Wave looks steadier. Focused. Maybe even humble. It’s solving real problems, making real money, and slowly expanding its horizon.
Rigetti feels more like a moonshot. If they fix their error correction, the payoff could be huge. But “if” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.
What I’m Really Learning
Turns out, investing in emerging tech isn’t about picking the shiniest startup. It’s about understanding momentum. Timing. Direction.
You start to see that behind every buzzword is a company trying to do something hard, often in the dark, while the market demands results yesterday.
I’m still figuring out what all the numbers mean. But I’m asking better questions now. Like: Who’s closer to turning their theory into something functional? Who’s actually building something that other people want to use — and pay for?
And maybe the most honest one: Am I investing in potential? Or just hoping for magic?
