UK and Germany Deepen Quantum Tech Collaboration with £14 Million Agreement

The UK and Germany have taken a significant step toward shaping the future of quantum innovation, unveiling a £14 million collaboration announced during the State Visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The agreement cements a shared commitment to accelerate research, development, and commercialization across one of the world’s fastest-advancing technology sectors.

At the centre of the deal is a core agreement to deepen bilateral cooperation, reinforcing the long-standing scientific relationship between two of Europe’s most influential research nations. The partnership aims to scale quantum capabilities through coordinated investment, joint programs, and aligned priorities for industry growth.

The funding package spans two significant areas. £6 million has been designated for joint quantum R&D, supporting projects that bring together UK and German expertise. This will help researchers push advancements in areas such as sensing, communications, and quantum computing. Another £8 million will fuel the expansion of Fraunhofer UK’s photonics center in Glasgow, strengthening the infrastructure needed to help British companies commercialize next-generation quantum products.

Beyond the financial commitments, the agreement includes a key structural milestone: a Memorandum of Understanding between the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Germany’s Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). This collaboration focuses on developing shared quantum standards — an essential foundation for global interoperability, trusted measurement, and widespread commercial adoption.

UK Science Minister Lord Vallance underscored the moment, noting that quantum technologies will reshape critical fields including cybersecurity, medical imaging, and drug discovery. He emphasized that deep partnerships with countries like Germany are essential to realizing these possibilities at scale.

With this agreement, the UK strengthens its position as Germany’s largest European research partner, while both nations signal a shared confidence in quantum innovation as a driver of economic growth and technological leadership.
