Stony Brook’s new SCY-QNet project isn’t just about cables and qubits—it’s about rewriting the very language of connectivity. With $4 million in NSF backing, they’re not dipping their toes into the quantum pool; they’re cannonballing straight in, linking up with Columbia, Yale, Brookhaven, and some of the sharpest minds in both academia and industry.

So, what’s a quantum network?

At its most basic, imagine a system where information isn’t just sent in ones and zeroes but in quantum states—like entangled particles that behave like cosmic twins, mirroring each other no matter how far apart they are. It sounds like science fiction, but it’s not. It’s physics. It’s real. And it’s potentially unhackable, because the moment someone tries to intercept the data, the quantum state changes and everyone knows.

SCY-QNet will string together 10 nodes over 270 kilometers, from Long Island to NYC, turning abstract quantum theory into tangible infrastructure.

Why does this matter?
