I used to think quantum computing was reserved for ivory towers and billionaire-backed labs—a realm of sealed boxes, guarded patents, and mysterious breakthroughs announced from behind closed doors.

Then I discovered Open Quantum Design.

At first, it felt like stumbling into a lab where the lights were already on and the doors—miraculously—were open. Led by physicist Mahmood Sabooni, this team isn’t hiding its blueprints. They’re publishing everything, from hardware schematics to source code, right on GitHub.

And that simple act—radical transparency—completely shifted how I saw the future of quantum.

Most of the industry still operates like it’s protecting state secrets. Access is limited. Curiosity is corralled. But Open Quantum Design invites participation. Anyone, from a graduate student to a curious engineer, can dive in, explore, build, and learn.

As I followed their work, it clicked: this isn’t just open-source tech. It’s open-source trust.

Sabooni compares it to Windows vs. Linux. Proprietary systems are polished and protected, but Linux thrived because people could experiment, contribute, and improve it together. Imagine that same collaborative energy in quantum, where every fix, tweak, or insight adds to a living, growing ecosystem.

That’s when I realized that this openness is not only generous but also strategic. It trains new quantum engineers. It accelerates innovation. It shares power.

And it welcomes people like me.

In a field where most are still “building the telescopes,” Open Quantum Design is handing them out. Because the fundamental discoveries—the game-changing ones—will come not from isolation, but from unexpected places and people.

The journey to understanding this wasn’t linear. But it was clarifying.

Openness isn’t just a nice idea. In quantum, it might be the key to making the future arrive faster—and belong to more of us.

And that’s a future I want to help build.
