The UK-based startup, founded in 2019 by a trio of academic heavyweights—Toby Cubitt, Ashley Montanaro, and John Morton—has just raised $34 million in Series B funding. As of September 2, 2025, that brings its total funding (including grants) to over $50 million. And this round isn’t just about the money—it’s a signal that the center of gravity in quantum computing may be shifting from flashy hardware to the less glamorous, but utterly essential, realm of software.

Phasecraft’s mission is unapologetically ambitious: to write the algorithms today that will make noisy, imperfect quantum computers useful now, not in some far-off quantum utopia. Their software is hardware-agnostic and purpose-built for the current generation of NISQ (noisy intermediate-scale quantum) devices—a class of machines that can’t quite be trusted but can’t be ignored either. Phasecraft is already deep in collaboration with leading quantum hardware players like Google Quantum AI, IBM, Quantinuum, and QuEra. Their industrial partnerships read like a who’s who of deep tech and infrastructure: Johnson Matthey, Oxford PV, the UK’s National Energy System Operator, and BT. The applications on the table—materials science, drug discovery, and energy resilience—are not just academically interesting; they are economically and environmentally urgent.
