When we invited Michael Magid onto the Impact Quantum podcast, I expected insight into quantum algorithms and maybe a spirited conversation about AI. What I didn’t expect was a masterclass in curiosity, humility, and what it takes to step into the quantum world—even when it still feels slightly out of reach.
Michael is a doctoral candidate at Binghamton University, specializing in quantum artificial intelligence and systems science. That title alone could intimidate most people. But from the moment our conversation began, it was clear: he’s not here to gatekeep. He’s here to open the door.
The biggest takeaway? It’s okay not to know. In fact, not knowing is part of the process. Michael described quantum computing as something you can’t truly “master” in the traditional sense—because just when you think you understand it, you realize there’s another layer. It’s not a straight path. It’s more like wandering into a dense, beautiful forest where the best discoveries happen when you’re willing to be lost for a little while.
He also reminded us that teaching is an act of empathy. The best educators (and Michael counts himself lucky to have a few) don’t just transmit information—they help students connect with it. That philosophy shines through in how he talks about everything from Shannon entropy to hybrid quantum-classical systems.
Another eye-opener: quantum’s limitations are driving innovation. The scarcity of available qubits isn’t just a problem—it’s a prompt. It forces creativity, leading to the rise of quantum-inspired algorithms and hybrid models that blend classical and quantum techniques. We’re not waiting around for a perfect quantum future—we’re building toward it with what we’ve got.
Michael also spoke frankly about how the pandemic slowed hardware progress and how much quantum still relies on geopolitical cooperation and infrastructure—things far beyond the lab.
But perhaps the most inspiring moment came when he said, “If it’s not your job, make it fun. If it is your job, make it useful.” That ethos resonates deeply with what we’re trying to do at Impact Quantum. This field doesn’t need more gatekeepers. It requires more inclusivity.
